Jim Miles is our most senior volunteer in the yellow army! At the incredible age of 94 years old, Jim is based in South Australia and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down! Not only has he volunteered with OzHarvest’s Victor Harbor chapter since its beginning, but he also volunteers for a number of other programs, including Encounter Industries, the Men’s Shed and Adare Uniting Church. In his earlier life, Jim was a farmer on the West Coast of South Australia. We had a chat with him about his time with us.
So, when did you start volunteering for OzHarvest?
I started volunteering on the 5th of October 2017, so I’ve been working with OzHarvest for almost 3 years!
What made you decide to start volunteering with OzHarvest?
Well, I heard good food was going to landfill. What a waste, having perfectly fine food going to waste, instead of to people who really need it. A friend of mine in Victor Harbor suggested that I join OzHarvest and I haven’t looked back!
Why do you think it is important to volunteer?
Well, I was brought up in a family that was very community minded, so I find it natural to want to be a volunteer. I think it is important to do your part, and I enjoy helping people. With OzHarvest, I’m helping with two important things: reducing food waste and getting good food to people that might otherwise go without.
Have you enjoyed your time working at OzHarvest?
Oh yes! I love my time volunteering for this charity and have met some wonderful people along the way. Bronte Collins is a great coordinator down here at Victor Harbor, so it is wonderful to get to work with him. I hope I can keep it up for some time! I’m lucky to still have a licence at 94, which means I’m still able to drive to all my volunteering jobs!
